Township youngsters train as wine advisors

Posted Tue, 19 Feb (4 months ago)

A good news story ran on bizcommunity.com this week about how 200 unemployed young people from our townships have been trained as wine advisers thanks to an R11m government-sponsored job creation programme.

The youths, aged 18 and older, were selected from both Western Cape and Gauteng townships for the 12-month training course as part of a joint partnership between the Department of Tourism and the Cape Wine Academy.

During the course the students learned about wine and marketing, and participated in six-weeks of practical courses at hotels, wine estate and other distributors.

Having graduated as wine advisers on the first level of the Cape Sommelier programme, they are now eligible to work in hotels, restaurants and the liquor industry.

The full story can be read here.
