The Gees that Rocked Durban

Posted Sat, 10 Jul 2010 (23 months ago)

A look back at the gees in Durbs during the World Cup, supplied by Portfolio's KZN assessor, Renee Vermeulen.

"I thought I would share some pics from our evening at Durban's beachfront fan park. This was the night of the semi-final Netherlands vs Uruguay, and you'll see that we were supporting the men in orange.

"Walking down the promenade towards the fan park, meeting people as we went along, it was like a tide that swept us along to join the thousands of fans already on the sand in front of the big screen.

"What an amazing atmosphere! Amongst the saffas there were lots of foreigners, mostly Netherlands supporters. But everyone, no matter their age or nationality, was intent on one thing only, sharing the 'gees' with everyone around them. Plenty of food and refreshment stalls kept the energy going, especially the sloppy chicken bunny chow after the game, gotta love Durban. And the celebrations continued long into the night at nearby Joe Kools.

"Needless to say they were turning people away from the fan park the next night as it was already so full. Fortunately there was a smaller park further along the promenade with another big screen that could accommodate the overflow.

"Sadly it's all over, but we'll always remember this past month with great memories."
