This is a traditional melktert recipe "net soos Ouma dit gemaak het)*"

3 tablespoons butter, melted

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon cinnamon sugar
To Make

Preheat the oven to 190 degrees C (375 degrees F)

Grease a 9 inch deep pie dish with butter or vegetable oil

Cream butter and sugar together in a large bowl, until smooth.

Add the egg yolks

Beat until light and fluffy.

Sift in the cake flour, baking powder and salt and blend thoroughly

Mix in the vanilla and milk.

In a separate bowl, whip the egg whites to stiff peaks

Fold into the batter

Pour mixture into the prepared pie dish

Sprinkle cinnamon over the top (some people sprinkle cinnamon & sugar)

Bake for 25 minutes in the preheated oven

Reduce the temperature to 165 deg C (325 degrees F) and bake for another 25 to 30 minutes, or until the center is set when you gently jiggle the pie

Delicious served hot or cold with strong coffee
