After languishing in the mid-20s for a while, a concerted effort in recent weeks on the part of the Cape Town tourism industry and local media saw Table Mountain shoot up to 5th place in its New 7 Wonders category "Mountains and Volcanoes" before dropping a few places again.
But not too many places - our beloved flat-topped mountain was still in the top 11 by the cut off date for that phase, trumping mighty mountains such as Everest and K2.
The next phase is not open to public voting - a panel of experts will read through documentation submitted by the various represenetatived of the natural wonders and they will then select 4 finalists in each category.
If Table Mountain makes it through we will be looking at a 2 year period of hard work promoting the mountain before final judging commences.
So all we can do at this stage is hold thumbs, send positive vibes, meditate, visualise or say a prayer that the experts will see the very real beauty, value and awesomeness of our mountain.
