Shosholoza Causes Shockwaves in Pacific Series

Posted Wed, 4 Feb 2009 (3 years ago)

Whilst Team New Zealand were the undefeated victors in the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series' first round robin on Tuesday this week, the shock factor of the day was provided by another Team...

The South African syndicate Shosholoza surprised everyone by blowing America's Cup holders Alinghi out of the water. Under skipper Paolo Cian Team Shosholoza got off to a perfect start and despite tricky windy conditions made short shift of the Swiss syndicate

However, Cian described the win as "beautiful, but useless" as it was not sufficient to avoid the Silver Fleet, which is essentially the repechage (heat in which competitors who have lost in a previous  round compete for a place in the semifinal.)

The fact that Shosholoza beat Alinghi by three minutes, 49 seconds - the biggest margin of the series so far, is sure to fuel the Team on to achieve even greater success as the event unfolds in New Zealand.

The series will certainly intensify from Thursday when the top six will be doing battle.
