SA's First Green Cab is All Systems Go

Our Cape Town assessor, Wanita Lassen, emailed me the following exciting news from one of 'our' Township B&B owners...

Last year I was informed by Thope Lekau, (pictured here) who runs her B&B Kopanong in Khayelitsha, that she and some others were starting a green cab company.  And I am so proud to say that they have pulled it off and that she is part of “The Green Cab” team (mentioned earlier this year on the Travel Blog).

According to their website, The Green Cab

"...provides SA first cost-effective, aggressively green tourism transport solution.  It speaks to growing pollution challenges by powering its vehicles with liquefied petroleum gas and bio diesel (second generation cooking oil). These low-carbon options provide visitors with an effective opportunity to offset their carbon emissions in the fight against global warming."

The Green Transport Services are as follows:

Airport Transfers: For conference delegates at a special discounted rate per delegate one-way
Welcome desk at the airport: they have a desk at the domestic and international arrivals to welcome and escort delegates to vehicles
Complimentary green transfers: free return transfers for up to 3 VIP’s and keynote speakers
Green transfers and Tours desk: at venue offering ad-hoc transfers and green tours to delegates for duration of the conference
Green footprint service: opportunity for delegates to calculate their carbon footprint based on air and land travel

In addition:

Legacy project: carbon off- setting opportunity in community based green energy project e.g. installing a solar heater at a pre-school
Green transport certificate: certifying the transport component of the conference as carbon-neutral through off-setting the emissions

THEY ARE SOUTH AFRICA’S FIRST TRANSPORT SERVICE WITH ECO-CREDENTIALS
87% LESS OZONE DEPLETING POTENTIAL THAN PETROL
