Rodin and Lewis Adorn Stellenbosch

Posted Fri, 5 Dec 2008 (3 years ago)

Two art legends, one living and one long gone, are celebrated in the picturesque Cape Winelands town of Stellenbosch thanks to the Rupert Museum’s feast of sculpture.

AUGUSTE RODIN

In a coup for South Africa, 27 of legendary French sculptor Auguste Rodin’s exquisite bronze sculptures are on display in a two year exhibition that began in August 08 – a rare and delightful treat for appreciators of the artist and 3D things of beauty.

The bronzes on display include famous works such as The Thinker, The Kiss and The Cathedral.

DYLAN LEWIS

Local artist Dylan Lewis has returned to his hometown of Stellenbosch, from 15 years of success internationally that culminated in a record-breaking solo auction at Christie’s of London in June 2007.

Forty-year old Lewis, renowned as a sculptor of the animal form, is exhibiting both in the Rupert Museum (Stellentia Avenue) and also throughout the streets of Stellenbosch in an outdoor exhibition of 23 sculptures on display until April 09.

According to the Rupert Museum website, the display is a

“carefully selected series of non-chronological works and installations, the threads underlying this progression from wilderness, to animal, to fragmented animal forms, to the human/animal interface embodied in his latest figure work are illustrated. Where does animal end and humankind begin? In exploring this tantalising enigma, Lewis searches wilderness for inspiration, meaning and answers.”

I remember driving past the gallery daily, on the way to and from work, while it was being built. I always thought I would make a point of visiting it when it was opened, but we moved offices so I don't drive past it anymore and I never saw any info announcing it's opening, so I've never visited. Now that you've reminded me I will make a point of visiting next week while I'm on leave.

We finally got round to visiting the Rupert Museum this past Saturday. I've blogged about the experience at http://craniac.net/2009/01/11/visit-to-the-rupert-museum/.
