Queen Mary 2 is in Town Again

Posted Tue, 24 Jan (4 months ago)

The World's biggest ocean liner has arrived in Cape Town this morning. The Queen Mary 2 has stopped over in the Mother City on her trip around the world.

Having recently left Walvisbaai, the QM2 is in the Mother City for two nights (she will depart again on Thursday 25 Jan 2012).

This magnificent ocean liner is the largest vessel of its kind in the world. Over 1000 foot long, 15 stories high and boasting 13 spacious decks, the QM2 offers its lucky passengers (currently 3000 of them) every luxury and pleasure.

Four swimming pools, opulent public areas, ballrooms, theatres, lounges and dining rooms serving five star meals. The 1 500 crew members work hard to ensure that every need is met and every wish granted. While many are on board for the full round the world trip (which will take 111 days in total) others with a more limited budget can enjoy shorter cruises - but still at a price.  The full trip costs in the region of $20  000,00 per person; the 7 day cruise will set you back in the region of $7000,00 per person.

My folks are two of the lucky ones to board today. It was most exciting seeing that large vessel with all its glamour and glory.
I was saddened at the impatience of many of the travellers as there was a delay due to a power cut on the ground. Remind me again why when boarding for 28 days of relaxation you have to be irritable with the poor souls doing their best to welcome you and be as pleasant as possible?
I am proud to say my folks came out of their hour and a half wait in the immigration tent with large smiles for everyone. What appreciative, unspoilt and gracious people they are. We love you Peter and Maddie. Enjoy your trip everyone!

It would be nice to know if they have an "open" hour or three for visitors to be able to go on board

Thank you Judy for your interesting comment. And your folks are lucky indeed and seem to be the kind of travelers who know how to appreciate the journey, both ups and downs!

Do you have any idea whether or not the ship will be open to the public for viewing today before leaving this evening?

We had the priviledge to be on the QM2. It is amazing and addictive.
We disembarked in Hong Kong, did not do the World cruise in full.
I think the people onboard coming into Cape Town must have enjoyed the beautiful scenery.
The Mountain and just looking at Cape Town.
We would have loved to see Her coming into Cape Town Harbour
People are people, some are friendly and some are really rude and impatient.
They payed a lot of money for their tours and just want to go sightseeing that is perhaps the reason for their impatience.
I hope they all enjoy the Cape and the beautiful surroundings Winelands and beaches and that they will come back for another visit to see the rest of South Africa.
Bon Voyage
