Once again we bring you some brilliant photographs and a fascinating ranger diary excerpt from Pumba Private Game Reserve.

Rangers Diary

01 February 2010

This month we have received 94mm of rain, which has been most welcomed, following the very dry period we have been experiencing. The last of the plains game are now giving birth, such as the Black Wildebeest.

With there being an abundance of water in our Brookhuizenspoort, which is a tributary to the Cariega river, there has been a magnificent array of birdlife seen in the Forests and Kloofs of the river, with the highlights being the Trumpeter Hornbills, and the extremely small though unbelievably colorful Pygmy Kingfishers, which are suspected to be nesting in one of the banks of the river.

In the middle of the week, guests witnessed an unusual sighting of Hyena feeding on a Kudu, which is suspected to have been killed by them Renowned to be shy on occasion, these animals provided great photographic opportunities for the guests, a first to be noted on the reserve. Hyena are now starting to be seen more regularly, following the sighting of three animals south of the Water Lodge, in the plains, hunting calves of Blue and Black Wildebeest.

The White Lioness continues to encounter the pride on occasion, with her staring to venture more into the middle section of the southern portion of the reserve. Though there is no evidence of her having been accepted into the pride yet, this is still being monitored and noted.
