Posted Mon, 3 Jan 2011 (17 months ago)

Herewith the final Ranger Diary from 2010 and over in to 2011, along with more stunning wildlife images from Pumba Private Game Reserve.

Ranger Diary

02 January 2010

The last week of December over Christmas Eve and New Years Eve, proved to be a very wet period, with the reserve having received 75mm of rain for the month. This though did not put the Field Guides off, as spectacular sightings were experienced by all, come sunny or wet weather.

The White Lions had been seen regularly with amazing encounters being witnessed by guests, of the lioness interacting with the Buffalo on four occasions. The White Lion and Lioness had also been seen, carrying out a kill on a Blue Wildebeest.

The Lion Pride in the main section of Pumba has been associating with each other a lot, as the lioness starts to show signs of coming into oestrus again. The two lion have been seen on occasion fighting with one another, as well as showing signs of getting frustrated with the presence of the Sub adult Males who are starting to show mane development. The highlight for many a guest who had visited us over this period, was the endless vocalizations being exchanged between the males and the pride as well as the White Lion.

The Elephant have proved to be quite challenging to find, with the wet weather driving them into the valleys of the reserve, though when opportunities to view them prevailed, they left many a memory for all who saw them. The three elephant bulls, whose origins stem from the Addo Elephant National Park, were frequently seen socializing amongst the herd, and being very tolerant towards the younger bulls looking for attention.
Sightings of Rhinoceros, Buffalo and Hippopotamus have also been very good.

The Rangers Department looks forward to the challenges that await it in 2011, and we look forward to sharing the New Year’s sightings with all who visit our site.
