Pumba Ranger Diary and Wildlife Photographs - 17 January 2012

Posted Tue, 17 Jan (4 months ago)

Happy New Year to all at Pumba Private Game Reserve! Pieter Dunn has once again sent us a fascinating excerpt from the Ranger Diary and some of his stunning wildlife images.

Ranger Diary

17 January 2012

The silence of the bush before the three cheetah brothers launches themselves towards their unexpected prey. This is a something that we have been very fortunate of witnessing for the last couple of weeks. On release the three brothers were just over the two years of age and they started hunting for themselves for the first time after release. They still make a mistake here and there ending their efforts in disappointment, but overall they are doing very well on the reserve. There had been sightings of blesbuck, nyala and blue wildebeest kills made by them and it seems like they are becoming a very formidable force to be reckoned with.

The lions are also adapting extremely well after they got moved over from Melville Park to the main side of the reserve. All lions, including Themba (the male) had been found hunting successfully on their new grounds and all are getting more and more comfortable moving around, covering huge distances on a weekly base. The little cub is also in very good conditions, and becoming very interested in her part to play in hunting, often being found chasing young antelope and warthogs around. Sightings of mating between the lions had also been recorded since they came over, giving us new excitement awaiting the possible addition of cubs somewhere in the first few months of this year.

The weather has also not been unkind to us, with pleasantly warm weather and a cooling cloudy day every now and then to break the heat a bit. This in turn is also allowing for numerous sightings of insect, reptiles and plant life that we have not been able to see for quite some time.

We are looking forward to a magnificent year in 2012 and will keep you up to date with what is happening with all our bush veldt friends.
