Ranger Diary

26 April 2010

The Cheetah, which where seen on two occasions last week, managed to successfully kill a Blesbuck, and Impala. The Impala was consumed by the pair, though no such luck was had, as the White Lion had stolen the Blesbuck from them.

The Hyena, have been seen and heard patrolling the plains south of our Water Lodge and to the east of the reserve village, as they move about looking for an opportune meal. The competition at present between the Hyena and Lion of the main section is not evident, though as the years go by and the populations increase, more interaction should be evident, as the super predators compete for food and territory. The Lions continue to interact with the Pride, and are very tolerant of the cubs, which are about three months now. The Pride where noted feeding on a Kudu Cow in the middle of the week.

The Buffalo in the main section of the reserve, have been seen frequently, making use of the young grass growth abounding the plains, associated with the Brookhuizenspoort River, which suites their habits, as the valley provides a safe haven for them, if approached by a threat.

Blesbuck are still being noted, giving birth to calves, as well as Kudu. With the good rains recently experienced, this would have encouraged any late births to take place. The rainfall patterns of the New Year have been very unpredictable, which often results in antelope delaying the birth process, until conditions improve. This phenomenon could be true, with the drought which is impacting on the landscape throughout the Eastern Cape Province. Hopefully, with us falling within a maritime climatic zone, we could expect a wet winter.

Such engrossing descriptions somehow makes me feel connected to the wild...

I really want to visit a game reserve in Africa one day.

Thank you for the update. :)
