Ranger Diary

19 April 2010

The Conservation team at Pumba have confirmed that all five cubs have been seen in the past week, being cared for under the watchful eye of the lioness. Very good sightings have been shared with guests, of the whole pride together. The cubs are becoming very inquisitive in nature as they grow, and start becoming more confident in exploring their new surroundings.

The large herbivores have also been sighted frequently, though with the very good rains that we have been getting, they have had the tendency to associate with the thicketed areas of the reserve.

The White Lioness and Lion as well as one of the split Lionesses have been noted together on three occasions on the north western boundary of our southern most property. The White Lions confronted the Cheetah in the middle of the week, stealing a hard earned kill from them in the early hours of the morning. The Cheetah managed to kill a Blesbuck, which was noted by the pride, only to have the White Lion chase them off. It was a small meal which merely lasted a few minutes.

The reserve welcomes good rains; to date we have received 57mm of rain, which can clearly be noted, on the plains that abound the reserve, as the grasses start to shoot new growth. What is interesting to note, is the late calving of certain species of plains game, with sightings of Red Hartebeest and Blesbuck calves being noted.
