Ranger Diary
16 August 2010
This past week has provided guests with very good sightings of both Lionesses, in our southern and northern sections, with their cubs. Both litters are growing and their inquisitive natures are getting the better of them. They are starting to explore their surroundings more, and are becoming aware of what can be of a threat to them, as well as food. The two Lion in the northern section continue to be drawn by the fighting and mating activities of the White Lion in the southern section of the reserve. The White Lioness was seen fighting with one of the split Lioness, after showing some affection towards the male.
Spring is in the area, as the reserve becomes abuzz with bird song and the busy activities of insects. Flowers are coming into blossom as well as the new leaf flushes across our endless valleys and mountains.
Buffalo, elephant and rhinoceros have been frequently seen, providing guests at both our lodges with good sightings of these amazing mega-herbivores from their private individual verandah’s. What proved to be the highlight of the week, for visiting guests was observing Cape Wagtails, being opportunists at gaining access to insects being flushed out of the grass and surrounding vegetation as Rhinoceros and the numerous general plains game, busily went about their daily activities of feeding.
