Another interesting round-up of the week's ranger diary and wildlife images from Pumba in the Eastern Cape.

15 March 2010

This past week has proved extremely exciting for all of our visiting guests. With intermittent hot and cold days being experienced, this has suited many of our wildlife species, providing excellent viewing of our high profile species, particularly the predators.

In the southern section of the reserve, the Cheetah were observed interacting with the White Lions. More and more of these confrontations are being noted, though with no fatalities, as these two super predators navigate themselves round the property in search of prey.

The White Lion has been spending a lot of time socializing with the White Lioness; this could be an indication of her coming into eostrus. The additional two Lioness have been mobbing her, though no brutality has been noted, this they are doing as a means of accreting dominance, over the White Lioness, as they feel intimidated by her change in condition. The conservation department is going to be monitoring this behavior closely. In the main section of the reserve, a Lioness has indicated to us that she has five cubs and not four as described two weeks ago. The cubs are starting to relax around the presence of the game viewers, as the pride start to make more use of their home range.

In addition to the cats of Pumba, the Breeding herd of Elephant continue to split up, with the young bulls, starting to associate more with the three mature bulls of the reserve. They have provided some amazing sightings, particularly while wallowing in the water holes and lakes scattered around the landscape. Buffalo have also been regularly sighted over the past week.
