Ramadan 2011 starts tonight and participating Muslims around the world (including South Africa where we have a large Muslim community) will begin their fast (no drinking, eating and sexual activities from dawn until sunset) from this evening. Pre-dawn, a meal called ‘sahur’ is eaten before the first call to prayer of the day.
Muslims who have reached puberty are expected to participate thenceforth for their entire lives, health permitting.
They are also required to use the month for reading the entire Qur’an, diligence in prayer and abstaining from evil.
