From cherries, strawberries and blackberries to roses and grapes, there's something special about taking a basket or crate and wandering through orchards and plantations selecting your own produce that takes you back to a simpler time. Or makes you feel as if you're in an advert for some aromatherapy bath product. In a good way!
Personally, I can recommend the beautiful Klondyke Cherry Farm (gorgeous any time of year whether the cherry trees are laden with fruit, snow or blossoms) as a great camping or day trip destination in the Western Cape for families. You can also picnick and braai among the pine trees on site. Cherry time isfrom the last week November till the end December.
The Cape winelands and the fruit-rich valleys of Ceres and the Overberg offer grape and deciduous fruit picking in season.
For something different pick you own roses at the Chart Rose Farm in upper Wynberg, overlooking the beautiful Constantia Valley - at just R4 a stem, you can spoil your loved one between late October and late June every year at a fraction of the florists' rates. There is also a coffee shop with views of the valley and mountains and other farm produce such as grapes, honey, etc.
