The magnificent monument of Table Mountain is one of the unique features that make Cape Town a unique and special destination. It offers unparalleled views of the entire Cape Peninsula, and a wilderness experience right in the middle of this wonderfully cosmopolitan city.

The Table Mountain Chain offers a variety of walks for all ages and fitness levels. To only observe the mountain is a waste – you need to get up there to really experience Cape Town – so believes tour guide Binny Ridgway of Ridgway Ramblers.

Binny has a background of “looking after people in the great outdoors”. First as a river guide, and more recently, as Operations manager for Felix Unite River Adventures. She now runs Ridgway Ramblers, a one-person concern that allows her to follow her life long passion for walking in the mountains by offering personalized guided walks and hikes to singles, couples or small groups. She loves to share her zeal for the mountains in and around Cape Town, specifically Table Mountain, by tailor-making walks to suit the needs and desires of each client.

With a BA in Environmental Management and as a qualified Nature Conservationist, Binny can share fascinating knowledge of the local flora and fauna with those walkers interested in discovering more about Cape Town’s natural heritage.
Binny says:
“I am firmly of the belief that a visit to Cape Town (and indeed to South Africa) is not complete, without a walk on Table Mountain.
I have explored the Table Mountain Chain extensively, and know its every secret nook and cranny. My greatest delight is to take people up the mountain, and share my knowledge with them.
I believe many of the guests who visit South Africa and stay in the guest houses, such as those listed by Portfolio, would enjoy a guided mountain walk. I focus on small personalized groups and individuals. I also offer transport and picnic lunches (with some traditional South African fare such as rooibos tea (iced on hot days) and home made rusks to my guests.”
Why do you need a Guide for a stroll in a mountain right in the middle of a city?
Good question - and one that many hikers - both novices and experienced walkers - should have asked themselves before becoming one of the many who get lost each year on Table Mountain. The weather can change without warning even on the sunniest of days, and while many get rescued off the moutain annually, there are the less fortunate who never make it back alive due to falling, becoming ill, getting lost or suffering dehydration and / or over-exposure in hot or cold temperatures for which they were ill-prepared.
Ridgway Ramblers offers a number of set options that can be adapted to the walker.
Examples include these half day options:
Platteklip Gorge Hike
Enjoy a somewhat strenuous walk up, and then come down in the revolving Cable Car. The views over Cape Town are breathtaking – as is the hike!
R350 per person (excludes cable car ticket)
Rooikat Ravine and Cecilia Waterfall Hike
The perennial waterfall above Kirstenbosch and Cecilia Forest is one of the most beautiful spots on the mountain. Expect some steep climbs!
R350 per person
