Parlotones Rock the Teatro, Monte Casino

Posted Mon, 13 Sep 2010 (21 months ago)

Regular guest blogger Bronwen Watson went to see the Parlotones live this weekend and just had to tell us all about it!

Friday, 10 September 2010 was rocked and rolled in true SA fashion by one of the country’s best-loved bands, The Parlotones! The venue: The Teatro, Monte Casino, Johannesburg (unusual, yet it worked). The vibe: electric! The band: ParloTastic!

On a Roll!

Rising stars within the South African music industry, the Parlotones have achieved much in their careers thus far and show incredible promise for many more exceptionally well-marketed ventures. These boys have a lot to say and know just how to spread the message!

Known for their “electric, polished stage performances delivered against the backdrop of their deftly crafted and darkly romantic lyrics”, The Parlotones have captured the hearts of many a South African alternative rock fan in an enormous way. The international scene is hot on their tail and with the South African leg of their current tour underway, the Parlotones are set to take the world by storm.

The tour kicked off right here on home soil and it’s apparent that these boys are set to reach new heights with their hopelessly addictive sound. You can’t help, but stand up and take notice of them when they play, release new albums and singles or launch new wine brands. The international leg kicks off from the 14th September 2010 and continues until the end of the year. The boys will be travelling extensively throughout the USA playing for crowds in Washington DC, San Francisco, New York, Seattle and many more. Next up are Germany and the UK and finally ending in Victoria Falls at the Falls Fest 2010 on the 30th December.

The world is certainly in for a treat, as were we at Friday evening’s performance at the Teatro. Up for a laugh, polished performances and pure quality, The Parlotones made the evening a rock concert to remember!

The Black Hotels

Getting things warmed up were up and coming SA indie rock band, The Black Hotels. For the past 3 years, The Black Hotels have enjoyed great success and it’s not difficult to see why. Having never seen them perform before, I can honestly say that this is a band to keep an eye on. This band will most definitely grow from strength to strength, developing immensely during the next few years, surely reaching new heights on the SA music scene.

Already an award winning band, their presence is certainly out there with much promise for the future. Watch this space! South African rock bands, such as this one, are developing a sound of their own of the same quality, if not better, of some of the world’s international acts.

KZN Youth Orchestra

A special treat was the appearance of this incredible orchestra during a handful of The Parlotones’ much loved and favourite single releases. The arrangements were flawless and had the crowd in awe as much as they were screaming and singing in unison with the band.

The orchestra was powerful and complemented the band beautifully. It was almost a shame that they weren’t involved with the second half of the performance. Having said that, The Parlotones are a rock band with intense energy and stage presence, with music that is not all suited to fuse with an orchestra.

A Toast: Bon Voyage & Good Luck!

Parolotones Live -  Axel Bührmann

A concert such as this one, put on in this way, within such an unusual venue largely suited to theatre performances, not concerts complete with an orchestra, must have a been tricky to arrange. I certainly had my reservations and arrived incredibly curious on the night. It worked like a bomb! It was AWESOME!

Largely viewed as ‘not the most conventional’ of bands, The Parlotones are super cool! I will admit to have caught onto their music a little late in the game (about a year or so ago), but their unusual and smartly marketed style is something that we can be proud of.

I know I look forward to seeing these boys reach even greater heights and make us even more proud as they entertain audiences the world over. I wish them all the luck in the world for the remainder of their world tour as I prepare to go out and purchase a bottle (or 2 or 3) of their vino! A toast to The Parlotones! Bon voyage!

They were fantastic - just please tell me how Kahn keeps moving like that - those leg jiggles are something else! One of the few concerts where I enjoyed every song - opening band and the main course - without getting bored at some time.

The man can certainly move - and get the ladies screaming!
