Posted Thu, 2 Jul 2009 (14 months ago)

Get out your diaries and start planning your accommodation NOW for the 2009 Pick ‘n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival, happening this year from 3 – 12 July. That’s 10 whole days of fun and festivities for all at the popular, picturesque Garden Route town.

The Knysna Oyster Festival has been bringing crowds of oyster lovers (and those who just enjoy the festive vibe that takes over the arty coastal town) to Knysna for 26 years.

Expect a programme brimming with over 100 events revolving around great food (including an estimated 200 000 oysters), fab entertainment, and for the more energetic plenty of sporting action. Add live music a-plenty, whisky and wine tastings and gala evenings for those who like to dress up, and you get the idea of the true party atmosphere that livens up mid-winter in South Africa.

Get your full printable programme here.

Sport-wise the two key events of the Knysna Oyster Festival are the Pick n Pay Cape Times Knysna Forest Marathon and the Pick n Pay Weekend Argus Rotary Knysna Cycle Tour. As the official festival site says, these events will give participants

“…the unique opportunity to run and cycle through the ancient indigenous forests that have made Knysna famous.”

Active families can also enjoy of paddling, golf, bowls, soccer, night biking and angling.

And, of course, there are all those oysters! Expect plenty of oyster-themed events such as the oyster eating competition and the Pick n Pay Oyster & Wine Mardi Gras.

And yes, kids are very welcome! There is a full children’s programme including youth theatre, puppet shows, creative art workshops, a children's cooking course and free sporting events.
