Ode to the Overberg

Posted Tue, 19 Jul 2011 (10 months ago)

Having spent time in the beautiful Overberg in recent weeks, Liz Westby-Nunn (our CEO) and Wanita Lassen (our Western Cape assessor) put together this lovely ode to the region.

soft luminescent light from the rolling hills of the Overberg
covered in green of all shades,
dotted with white sheep, baby lambs and blue cranes.
early morning dew rising mistily from the hills
framed by towering mountains or gentle ruens*.
winter is when the Overberg is dressed at its best
infused by that light, soft glowing light

*ruens is an abbreviation for the Dutch word 'ruggens' meaning rolling hills

Our Portfolio of Overberg Farm Stay Accommodation

Portfolio offers a wonderful selection of Overberg accommodation in charming farm stays and country homes in this gorgeous region.

Consider the following when planning your next Overberg holiday.

Jan Harmsgat De Wagenhuis

De Wagenhuis near Swellendam

De Wagenhuis is in Buffeljagsrivier near Swellendam in the Western Cape and here, Andrew and Anneke welcome guests to “the most historic” farm in the Overberg, circa 1794 where today, dairy and citrus are farmed in a rural, tranquil setting. The main house is a National Monument and spacious comfortable guest bedrooms are in the restored wagon house.

Skeiding Guest Farm between Swellendam and Heidelberg

A warm welcome awaits at Skeiding Guest Farm, a 1200-hectare ostrich, grain and sheep farm between Swellendam and Heidelberg, 7 km off the N2 in the Western Cape. Easy access to R62 through the Tradouw Pass. Enjoy panoramic mountain views over a rolling landscape. Experience farm life with a “hands-on” farm tour with Neels, feeding ostriches and observing Nguni cattle and sheep dogs in action.

Rouxwil Country House near Caledon and Greyton

Rouxwil Country House, near Greyton and Caledon is set amongst wheatfields, orchards and majestic mountains. Unwind in comfort in luxury garden rooms with breathtaking views of the valley and plains game. A personalised farm tour with sundowners and a gentle river cruise are unforgettable experiences.

Jan Harmsgat Country House near Swellendam and Ashton

Jan Harmsgat Country House offers luxury accommodation near Swellendam and Ashton in the Overberg Region of the Western Cape. Jan Harmsgat has seen a renaissance with new owners, Camron and Willie, who have captured its rich past in a way that offers modern comforts and charm. Indulge in authentic country ambience and history with original metre thick walls, yellowwood details and traditional Overberg style.

Klippe Rivier Country House outside Swellendam

The country road winds past vineyards and orchards to Klippe Rivier, a magnificent tranquil Cape Dutch Country House, circa 1820, on the outskirts of historic Swellendam, two hours from Cape Town and the Garden Route. A warm, friendly welcome awaits from Taffy, the Corgi, and Magic the black cat. Once the family home of Free State Presidents Steyn and Reitz, recall the gracious past with its spacious voorkamer and reception rooms where gleaming yellowwood floors enhance beautiful antiques. The original ‘waenhuis’ and stables have been converted into luxury air-conditioned bedrooms preserving much of the original ambience.
