OTC Ticket Sales for 2010 World Cup Available from April

Posted Fri, 29 Jan 2010 (2 years ago)

“Over the counter, without a shotgun – pretty soon, everybody’s got one…”

So sang Irish supergroup U2 in their song Desire. And so we can say regarding tickets for the 2010 FIFA World Cup come April, when tickets for the mega-event will become available via over the counter sales.

This decision was confirmed by football governing body FIFA and the Local Organising Committee on Wednesday of this week at an executive meeting of the FIFA ticketing committee in Zurich, Switzerland.

Until then, ticketing has been only available between set dates via a draw system where fans could apply online or by filling in application forms at First National Bank (FNB) branches.

As we reported recently, this limited approach caused an outcry from South African football fans who felt the process too complicated for many who do not have access to the Internet or live far from the limited banks.

According to media reports, South Africans can account for 79% of the total of applications received in the third phase of the ticket sales.

To date, almost two million tickets have been sold so far with six matches oversubscribed.
