National Marimba Festival to Strike a Chord with Music Lovers this Weekend

Posted Thu, 23 Jul 2009 (3 years ago)

Over 900 marimba players from throughout the African continent will get together to make beautiful music this weekend at the National Marimba Festival.

If you are in the Boksburg area it will be really worth your while to attend this event – the marimba is a wonderful, harmonious instrument on its own, but when played in a group the music that is created is truly awe-inspiring – rhythmic, melodious and distinctly African.

For those who don’t know… The marimba is a percussion instrument with keys or bars (usually made of wood) arranged as those of a piano or xylophone which are struck with mallets to produce musical tones.  The marimba originated in Africa although it was imported to South America in the sixteenth century and is often associated with Guatemala.
