Got itchy feet and (miraculously) money to travel this year? The world’s a big place – and you’re spoiled for choice. However, if you (like us) are lucky enough to call SA home, The New York Times is telling you to stay right where you are!
Or visit one of the other ‘44 Places to Go 2009’ as per their annual travel guide.
Each year the legendary newspaper compiles and publishes a list of “the world's most compelling holiday destinations” as voted for by both the readers and the editors.
The 44 Places are all featured on a page which allows the reader to select their preferred destination from the following categories:
- Luxury
- Family
- Eco
- Frugal
- Foodie
- Culture
- Party
And our wonderful country – which really could fall into ALL the above – was chosen to be featured as a Great Place to Party!
Yay!
While the Times readers placed us at number 20, the Times editors named us 34th on the list (although they did name Beirut #1?) and described our country as offering
‘affordable luxury’, saying that SA is ‘becoming one of the best bets for American travelers looking for a high-end experience at low-end prices”.
So if you don’t live here consider South Africa as an affordable, incredible destination for your 2009 travel plans.
And remember to pack your party shoes!
