Ever feel a sense of helpless rage seeing some careless person flick a cigarette butt out of the window of a car while driving past pristine South African bush? Now there's something you can do about it.
In these current hot, and in many parts of the country incredibly windy, days of late summer we need to remember to do our bit to prevent fires which can so easily get out of control.
It's not "rocket surgery" people - we all know not to throw cigarette butts out of car windows and yet we see people doing this every. single. day.
It seems many smokers are more concerned about not having their car stink of (their own !) cigarette smoke than about possibly causing a fire that can devastate large areas of our beautiful country, wipe out insects and animals and threaten homes and even human lives.
I just don't get it. And I've always wished I could do more than hooting and gesticulating at the offending party (who generally laugh or give the finger in return).
And yes, we've all heard the 'theory' (usually from the lips of the unrepentant stompie-thrower) that most fires are not caused by smoldering stompies - but is it really wise to take that risk?
The City of Cape Town has come up with an idea of how, at best, to catch some of the culprits - and if nothing else to give those of us who find this behaviour unacceptable a place to take our frustration.
Take down the offending driver's car numberplate number and call
021 4247715
with a description of the vehicle and the area where the incident occurred.
I called them myself today and the helpful man who answered told me that when a complaint is lodged at this number the report is sent through to the Fire and Life Safety Department, who then issue a warning letter to the owner of the vehicle. If a second complaint is made regarding the same vehicle a fine may be issued, especially if the area is near open bush where the chances of a runaway veld-fire developing are greatest.
If anyone knows of a similar service available in other parts of the country do tell us in the comments box below.
