I've been promising myself that I'd go to this community event for the past 5 years and finally, en route from a surf lesson in Muizenberg on Saturday (another blog post for another day) the lure of braaing fish aromas mingling with the fresh ocean breeze enticed us out of a hot car and into the gardens of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Kalk Bay Main Road.
While the now infamous stop-go system on this coastal road which causes delays of up to an hour on a hot weekend probably meant the event was not as well attended as usual, there was a good turnout of locals and visitors, more than happy to pay thye R5 entry to get at the stalls selling barbequed yellowtale, hake & chips, fish curry and seafood paella among other tasty dishes at R35 a plate.
We grabbed our food and an ice cold beer and found a shady spot in the graveyard (which is a picturesque garden with flowers, trees, butterflies and a seaview) alongside a large tombstone dedicated to the memory of a Jonathan Fish - true story!
We didn't have time to stay for the live music or lucky draws but if you're in the mood for a chilled day out with tasty food and lots of local atmosphere diarise the Kalk Bay Fish Fare for 2014!
