Last Week's Animal Sightings & Ranger Diary from Pumba

Posted Mon, 14 Dec 2009 (2 years ago)

Another fascinating entry from the Pumba Game Ranger's Diary, and images to illustrate last week's animal sightings.

6 December 2009

The calving and lambing season has arrived with the majority of our plains game giving birth. Guests while on drive have had the joys of bearing witness to Blesbuck and Impala giving birth, only to then look on to see a small little calf learning to take is first steps into a whole new world. This season will continue through until late January 2010. The height of the calving season is generally timed with the onset of good rains, which will provide the plains game with all the required sustenance to ensure the effective growth of their offspring.

 Spotted Hyena

The lioness which roams the northern section of the reserve, had more success with hunting warthog, close to Pumba Water Lodge, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, after making numerous attempts on the plains being overlooked by the lodge. Two Spotted Hyena were also noted associating in the areas were a lot of the plains game feed, looking for an opportune moment of being able to hunt successfully.

 Lionesses grooming each other

The White Lioness entered into its final week of being habituated to the two lionesses of the pride. The habituation process has gone well, with all the lionesses associating with one another showing no animosity towards each other.

The Conservation Team will be looking at releasing all the lionesses on Monday the 07th December 2009, were it will be upto the White Lioness to associate and become a recognized pride member, which will benefit her when hunts are carried out. The conclusion of the introduction will follow next week, with a series of photographs captured during the release.
