All scrapbooking and handmade paper fans should take note of the popular course in hand bookbinding which will be repeated at the Afrikaanse Taalmuseum in Paarl during the school holidays, from 26 to 28 June.
This intensive three-day course will provide participants with the basic knowledge and skills to bind their own books, with the minimum of tools. The course will focus on the sewing of the sections, the glueing of the spine and the making of a cover.
No previous expertise is required.
The presenter is conservation specialist Johann Maree, who trained at the Swiss Centro del Bel Libro and at the Austrian National Library, and worked at the University of Cape Town Libraries as Head of the Department of Paper and Book Conservation for 28 years, before retiring in 2008. He has presented numerous courses on bookbinding and paper conservation nationally and internationally.
