The iconic flat-topped mountain that dominates the skyline of Cape Town and the hearts of all South Africans is up against some stiff competition in its category, Volcanoes and Mountains under the New 7 Wonders of Nature - including Mount Everest, Mount Fuji and Mount Olympus.
While we were recently placed at 27 we have slipped down to 29 so we urge all of you who have not yet voted to do so NOW and thereby avoid us sliding completely out of sight.
According to the Vote for Table Mountain site,
Table Mountain is one of the 261 magnificent natural sites from 222 countries that have made it through to the second round in this global race to name the New 7 Wonders of Nature.
The New 7 Wonders of Nature will be determined by votes from the public and South Africans can show their support for the Mother City’s majestic mountain by visiting www.new7wonders.com and casting their vote.
In case you're wondering why it's so important to vote for a South African landmark, remember that the amount of interest and publicity generated by such a massive global initiative can go a long way in boosting our tourism industry which, along with so many other industries in SA, is feeling the effects of the global economic downturn.
South Africa is still one of the most affordable and popular destinations available to those from first world countries and we need to keep a strong presence in the psyche of the international traveller's mind.
Voting in the second phase to select the top 77 runs until July 7 this year, after which a panel will select the 21 finalists which will be announced on July 21. Hereafter, the third and final phase of voting will begin.
The official New 7 Wonders of Nature will be revealed in 2011.
