Portfolio Collection's Creative Director has been hanging out in Durbs this week and, as is his way,
working hard drinking lots of coffee. He took time out between flat whites to tell us about the best of Glenwood's cafés.
's creative coffee culture has moved into a new 'hood. It's Glenwood, up on the hill above Durban CBD and alongside Berea. It's an old suburb with wide streets, magnificent trees and old mansions looking out over the harbour.
Factory Café has done industrial conversion better than anywhere in SA. A genuine old factory (just below Glenwood), still full of giant machinery, with superb coffee and tea blends. It looks like nothing from the street, until you wind up the stairs and this incredible space opens up. Coffey and Cake says: "This coffee shop exudes passion and a true love of good coffee."
Glenwood Bakery is similar to Olympia Cafe in Kalk Bay; eclectic and charming, with the smell of fresh artisan bread baking.
Corner Café is like Obs in Cape Town - but with way funkier decor. At the end of the day they clear away all the tables to make way for a yoga class. On a warm Durban evening with all the doors and windows open, it's hard to believe you're in the middle of winter. Coffey and Cake recommend it as "the perfect spot to spend a Saturday morning in Glenwood."
If you're on business in the city it's fabulous to return to a place Iike Abalone Place
, a beautiful 1941 home now meticulously renovated with spacious suites and beautiful fabrics. It's a stroll from a nature reserve and a few minute drive to all these coffee spots.
