Gentle Giraffes and Historic Tours at Fugitive's Drift

Posted Thu, 23 Sep 2010 (20 months ago)

Some news from George Irwin at Fugitive's Drift in Battlefields,KwaZulu-Natal.

Fugitives’ Drift has had an exciting year.

While we were too far from any match venues to truly benefit from the World Cup, we have heard nothing but positive accounts of visitors’ time here in South Africa and are convinced of the event’s long-term benefit throughout KwaZulu Natal.

Wildlife

We are also very pleased that our giraffe population is increasing at almost exponential rates. We now have a complement of 14 giraffe, as well as numerous other species including zebra, wildebeest, kudu and nyala. With little predation, the giraffe here are particularly relaxed and inquisitive, making game walks through our 5000-acre reserve a highlight of a three- or four-night stay at Fugitives’ Drift.

Historic Tours

Our main focus remains the flagship battlefield tours to Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana. Rob Caskie, our Senior Lecturer who has worked at Fugitives’ Drift for ten years, now leads a team of passionate historians who have more than 25 years experience in lecturing guests on the battlefields of KwaZulu Natal. Although the history doesn’t often change, our understanding and interpretations do. Discussions around the dinner table cover a wide range of subjects, but they inevitably return to our region’s history and how that history has shaped the world we live in today.

Fugitives’ Drift continues to be an experience not to be missed and never forgotten.

1 Response to Gentle Giraffes and Historic Tours at Fugitive's Drift

I recently witnessed Rob Caskie's amazing Zulu war history talk at the famous Westminster Abbey in London. It was an absolute pleasure being taken on a imaginery journey of all that happened many years ago on those battlefields. Rob deserves the utmost respect for all his knowledge and compasion on the subject. It was a fantastic evening, and I can only imagine it would be twice as good being given the talk at the actual battle site at Fugitive's Drift. Many thanks Rob and Karen.
