Friends of the Rail
About Friends of the Rail
Friends of the Rail is a recreational club (and registered not-for-profit organisation) originally formed by a group of Pretoria-based railway enthusiasts back in 1986. The main objective of FoTR is to ensure the survival of South Africa's railway heritage. To this end FoTR run frequent public train excursions to educate as well as raise funds to continue their work.
The club consists of an open membership - most members want to get involved with some aspect or another of railway heritage, usually as a hobby.
Those who wish to fulfil a lifelong dream of being a 'steam train driver' can do so through FoTR training offered to members (this process includes extensive formal railway training through all the different levels of becoming a railwayman / woman.
Members who wish to be involved in other ways have many avenues through which they can show their support.
