Flamenco Fusión Flair!

Posted Mon, 22 Feb 2010 (24 months ago)

Bronwen Watson invites our Jo'burg readers to a feast of dancing at Flamenco Fusión, a spectacular show that fuses Flamenco and African dance styles.

“It’s a sensual rhythm that entices your imagination, the click of a castanet, the whirl of a skirt, the guitar’s soulful sound. It’s Fusión Flamenca, and it’s brought to you by El Rincon Flamenco.”

Dance, whatever the style, is in its simplest form emotion set in motion. Like all dance styles, Flamenco dance is rich in history, having adapted from several influential art forms and origins. It is an art that the truly impassioned can master by reaching into the very depths of their souls. This is how such beautifully emotional stories can be interpreted and told through the intensely powerful and passionate rhythm that is Flamenco dance. Combined with the rhythms of African and contemporary dance styles, Fusión Flamenca is a spectacular cultural creation not to be missed!

Fusión Flamenca

Two years after bringing the mesmerising production of Caminando (“The Journey”) to South African and Indian audiences, and nearly 9 months of rehearsal, the El Rincon Flamenco Dance Company is back with a remarkably beautiful piece interweaving the intricately cultural dance styles of Spain, Africa and Europe.

Fusión Flamenca is set to enthral Johannesburg audiences once again with a truly special blend of Flamenco, contemporary and African Gumboot dancers, all performing to the beats of accompanying percussionists and the captivating rhythms of guitarists, Rudo Van Staden and Andre Liebenberg of Mischief Guitar Duo. Audiences can also look forward to a special guest appearance by renowned Flamenco dancer, Rosana Maya (pictured left)

Directed, produced and choreographed by Mireille Lenferna and Joanne Bobrow, Fusión Flamencais a work of true passion that has been crafted to showcase the wonders of rhythmic expression and strikingly dramatic movement.

This show is all about “fusing flamenco with other art forms, keeping it pure in its traditions and feel. Flamenco has its roots from Africa as well and they blend so well together,” says Mireille.

Fusión Flamenca is a beautiful ode to the power of dance and its passionate origins. This is a show that’s perfect for any lover of dance, rhythm and storytelling. With movement this visually dramatic and powerfully beautiful, Fusión Flamenca is bound to be a memorable experience that will take your breath away!

El Rincon Flamenco Dance Company

For the past 25 years, El Rincon Flamenco has been teaching the true art of Flamenco to many young dancers. Initially under the direction of Hazel Acosta the company, since 2005, has been run by Mireille Lenferna and Joanne Bobrow, both company members and students of the Alianza Flamenca syllabus.

At present, the company consists of 10 dancers who have all trained extensively both locally and abroad. The company regularly performs at corporate functions and cabarets, as well as in various shows for the Spanish Embassy in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Members and dancers of the company can also regularly be seen performing their stunningly awe-inspiring choreography at the Viva España Restaurant in Midrand.

A Flamenco fair! Wow, that’s good to know. Flamenco is an art that has to be visually and sensually experienced, and I’m sure will enthral the crowd.
