Fish Hoek Spring Swim and Muizies Earth Wave Event Comin' Up

Posted Fri, 3 Sep 2010 (18 months ago)

This month sees two annual beach-based events in the False Bay area, both of which are fun for the whole family.

SUNDAY 5th SEPTEMBER - FISH HOEK SPRING SWIM

This coming weekend, come rain or shine, a group of fairly crazy locals (and no doubt some game visitors) will meet at 3 pm on Fish Hoek Beach for the annual Spring Swim. This event is held on the first Sunday in September every year and for many (yours truly included) it's the start of daily swimming at the beach that continues through to next autumn. (The truly insane swim throughout the year).

Weather permitting, there will be fun family events from 10 am, but the main event will happen at 3, followed by reduced price hot drinks at the Bayside Bistro (beachfront cafe) for all swimmers.

This year's theme is Fish Hoek Wildlife - yes that's right, the organisers are encouraging swimmers to dress in outlandish costumes for the swim. As sharks and whales are the only wildlife we really get in these parts I predict lots of fake fins and black wetsuits...

Look out for photographs of this event on Monday (although rain is predicted...)

SAT & SUN 26th & 27th SEPTEMBER - MUIZENBERG EARTH WAVE FESTIVAL

The 4th Earthwave Beach Festival is centred around the annual Guinness World Record attempt for the most surfers to ride the same wave.  Last year saw the record set with 110 surfers on a single wave.

This event is held at Surfers Corner, Muizenberg and apart from the record attempt there is plenty of entertainment laid on including:

  • A national SA Longboard Surfing (SALSA) event and Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) races featuring many of the country’s top performers
  • fun beach activities for the kids
  • demonstrations and talks on climate change
  • Dig for Gold treasure hunt with prizes worth tens of thousands of rands
  • An after-party at the Brass Bell, Kalk Bay

NOTE: The actual record attempt will be made between 1pm and 2pm on Sunday 26 September, with registration starting at 10am.

Paul Botha from Kahuna Promotions, the organisers of the festival says:

“Earthwave has become a really fun, mass participation event since 2006 with more than 440 surfers of every age and ability paddling out to break the record last year, and three times that many on the beach urging them on. We’re inviting environmental organisations and companies to join us at the event to raise awareness of climate change and what can be done to reduce our impact on the planet.”
