Community Chest is an organisation that creates opportunities for philanthropy and giving, thereby raising funds to help alleviate poverty in South Africa. The annual Carnival raises funds for some 400 social welfare organisations that the Community Chest supports. These provide services ranging from healthcare and rehabilitation to child support and care of the elderly

Each year thousands of people from all over the Mother City flock to Maynardville in Wynberg to enjoy the revelry under the Cape Town skies. 

According to the Community Chest website, the Carnival

"...began as a Theatrical Garden Party in 1951 and has grown to become the biggest Public Relations event on our events calendar. 9000 volunteers donate their time, skills and expertise in order to create a carnival that brings the community together for four fun filled evenings."

Amazingly, close on 9 000 volunteers donate their time and skills to ensure that each year’s event is better than the preceding one.
