FTTSA Special Feature BUSH LODGE ON AMAKHALA

Posted Tue, 28 Apr 2009 (3 years ago)

Julie Newcombe, Marketing Coordinator with Amakhala, tells us - in this next item in our series on Fair Trade in Tourism in South Africa - what makes the Bush Lodge on Amakhala FTTSA compliant.

Bush Lodge & Reed Valley Inn

  • We source and train up local staff in the trade to help develop their personal goals and give them the opportunity in a career in the hospitality industry.

  • All staff have training twice a month to ensure that the staff continue to grow as employees. 60% the staff working at Reed Valley are 5th generation to work on this property.

  • The Lodge was built on wooden stilts to reduce the carbon foot print.

  • All our products, including cleaning chemicals and guest amenities are eco-friendly and bio-degradable.

  • All of our waste products between the two lodges are recycled.

  • All of our suppliers are from the local community and we support small enterprises.

Woodbury Lodge

  • We have a purchasing policy of using small local suppliers as much as possible.

  • We source as many staff as possible from our farms and surrounding community and train/promote them into the hospitality sector using our lodge.

  • We recycle all waste products.

  • The lodge was built in such a way to minimize disturbance of natural vegetation.
