Eddie Izzard in South Africa - A Review

Posted Mon, 8 Feb 2010 (2 years ago)

The recent visit of UK funnyman Eddie Izzard to South Africa was welcomed by his many fans this side of the globe. Capetonian Ann Wilson tells us about her night with Eddie...

Eddie Izzard Live
4 February 2010
Cape Town International Convention Centre

For weeks there was much excitement and anticipation leading up to going to see Eddie Izzard live. Tickets were bought, to the tune of R550 per person and with echoes of the well loved Death Star Canteen  in my ears, I was ready to see the man in action.

Having only attended events like the annual Cape Town Book Fair and Good Food  & Wine Show at the CTICC, I was curious to see what the venue offered to accommodate live performances. The bar area outside the auditorium was a hive of activity with people meeting for pre-show drinks. For those looking for something light to eat, there were sandwiches and pies for sale, as well as coffee. Unfortunately they did not cater for those looking for something more substantial to eat.

Eddie Izzard came onto the stage to thunderous applause and whistling. Those who were fortunate enough to have seen him perform live before, knew what to expect. The rest of us had to be happy with snippets of his previous performances viewed on YouTube, up to now.

And we were in for a treat. It is amazing how one man can shuffle around on the stage with a microphone in his hand, making mumbling noises with candid facial expressions and have the crowd in stitches. He took us through creation and evolution, the prehistoric age, the Stone Age, right up to the “age of man” - the Egyptians, Romans and Greeks.

And through it all, I was just waiting to hear the line “Do you know who I am?” #DeathStarCanteen

For those who were unable to see the show - sorry that you had to miss out on a night of laughter.

Post Script:

While in South Africa Eddie seemed to be quite enamoured of our country and people... two of his tweets on Twitter read as follows:

  • Just leaving Cape Town. It's beautiful here in South Africa. Do come over for the World Cup. I think it will be fantastic 5:31 AM Feb 6th
  • Thanks Johannesburg - two great gigs & thanks to the Soweto Gospel Choir who sang me happy birthday. An honour. 5:59 AM Feb 4th

I am dreadfully sorry I missed it!!! :-(
Believe me, I'll catch him next time 'round. He is one of the most brilliant human beings alive today...and I mean that quite sincerely.
