Chappies Open for Two Oceans

16 February 2009

Following on from the good news that Chapman's Peak will be open for the Pick 'n Pay Cape Argus Cycle Tour, we now have received notification that the popular scenic drive will also be opened for this year's Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon.

Runners will be delighted at the news as Chappies is a major highlight of the Marathon, which is set to be held on 11 April this year. As is the case with Argus participants, Two Ocean's runners will have to sign indemnity forms, and there is still the proviso that if conditions are not considered safe enough on the day that the route may be altered.

In addition to this welcome news, today's Cape Time's also reports that the team which will be investigating the partnership between provincial government and Entilini Concessions (the company tasked with managing the route).

The team, which will carry out "a comprehensive review of the project" due for completion on 31 March 2009, includes:

  • Joey Pillay & Terense Arendse (both of the Western Cape Provincial Treasury)
  • Hannes Mouton (Department of Transport and Public Works)
  • William Dachs & James Aiello (National Treasury Public Private Partnership Unit)

These team members will work with the support of financial, geo-technical and legal consultants.

Each aspect of the project will be investigated and assessed, after which the team will make its recommendations known to Premier Lynne Brown.
