Cathedral Peak Helps Raise Funds for Rural Project

Posted Wed, 1 Jun 2011 (12 months ago)

Heartwarming story for a cold winter's day, from the Drakensberg's Cathedral Peak Hotel 's latest newsletter.

Thanks to the kindness and generosity of the children at Keston Primary School in Old Coulsdon in Surrey (UK), who raised £3,600 by doing a sponsored walk at the school for a rural project called Zamori in South Africa. Sue Van der Riet on behalf of Cathedral Peak Hotel and Amanda England (Ethos Marketing) and a Keston School Parent made the project happen!

This community upliftment project was set up by the Cathedral Peak Hotel (a family owned Leisure resort in the Drakensberg mountains represented in the UK by Amanda England of Ethos Marketing in ) to help the local Zulu community which is desperately poor and in need.

This money converts to nearly R40,000 (an incredible amount that by far exceeded the initial target of just £500!) and will go a long way towards helping these people when they need it the most … as winter is fast approaching.

Temperatures regularly drop below freezing in the mountains and most families there live in traditional mud huts or drafty tin shacks – often insulated with only soap bar wrappers! This money will provide one set of winter clothes each of the 25 infants in the Impumelelo crèche. It will also be spent on supplying 40 of the neediest children at the local Ididima Primary School with a warm jacket and a school uniform including shoes and socks.

These children are either orphans or live within child-headed families or live in homes where there is no income whatsoever. Any money left over will be used to buy skipping ropes, soccer balls and crayons for both the crèche and primary school. Keston presented Amanda with the cheque along with beautiful murals that each year group had painted to decorate the walls of the school /crèche at Impumelelo Crèche and Ididima Primary School. The children worked really hard on these murals depicting scenes of typical life in the UK and the ties across the seas that they hope to establish.

As a token of thanks the children from the Ididima Primary School sent pictures depicting their rural lifestyle in the Drakensberg and the project hopes to sustain an ongoing relationship where the children can set an example of building meaningful and sustainable relationships across all barriers that are mutually beneficial and facilitate ongoing learning and leaving a legacy.
