Cape of Cycles - Pedal Power Races in

Posted Fri, 4 Mar 2011 (15 months ago)

Cycling fever grips the Cape this month as several major cycle races take place in the City and Winelands. Perfect weather and high temperatures are forecast for this weekend as thousands of enthusiasts power their way across the Winelands.

Starting today is the 3-day stage race, The Columbia Grape Escape, followed by the Cape Argus MTB Challenge on Sunday. Cycling fever reaches a pitch, culminating with the legendary Cape Argus/Pick n Pay Cycle Tour on Sunday 13th March 2011.

Sadly due to lack of sponsorship, the 2011 Giro del Capo has been cancelled. For the past 18 years the prestigious Giro del Capo has provided most local cyclists with their only opportunity to compete against top international cyclists.

The new 225km 3-day Columbia Grape Escape pedalled off today at 9am from Blaauwberg and riders will race 80km to Nelson Wine Estate near Wellington. Tommorrow, Saturday the 78km stage 2 heads off to Boschendal Wine Estate near Franschhoek. The 3rd stage on Sunday is a 67km round trip from Boschendal – Plaisir de Merle – Boschendal.

The Route for The Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour on Sunday 13 March 2011 starts in the city centre, at the Civic Centre.

Cyclists then travel along the M3 to Lakeside and on to Boyes Drive.

Cyclists will then rejoin the Main Road at Kalk Bay after a steep descent from Boyes Drive. From there the race takes the coastal road to Simonstown and then go past the entrance to the Cape Point Nature Reserve.

Cyclists then continue to Scarborough and on to Oceanview, missing the Kommetjie Hill. Then its Chapman’s Peak and up Suikerbossie and along the coast to Greenpoint and the finish! The Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour is more than just a day of cycling, the entire City becomes a part of this legendary event.
