Can you draw? Interested in politics? If the answer is yes to both questions, a practical, hands-on opportunity to study the art of political cartooning, provided by Iziko Museums and Stellenbosch University’s CCIBA (Centre for Comic, Illustrative and Book Arts), could be for you.
The 2-day workshop, to be held at Iziko in Cape Town on the weekend of 14-15 August, features Cape Town’s top cartoonists:
- Zapiro (Sunday Times, The Times, Mail & Guardian)
- Brandan Reynolds (Business Day, Weekend Argus, Rapport)
- Jeremy Nell (The Times)
- Chip Snaddon (Cape Argus)
- Stacey Stent (Noseweek)
- Dave Gomersall
- Gavin Thomson (Trek Net)
- John Curtis (Africartoons)
Facilitated by CCIBA’s Andy Mason and Iziko’s Kathy Coates, the workshop will provide a fascinating interactive programme looking at the history and tradition of political satire in South Africa, the nuts and bolts of creating cartoons and cartoon strips, and the creative secrets of some of the country’s most successful and controversial cartoonists.
The presentations will include practical sessions facilitated by the cartoonists and participants will be given the opportunity to publish the results of their efforts in TOONLAB TABLOID, a special publication to be published and distributed by Iziko and CCIBA.
The event is part of the CCIBA’s TOONLAB programme. TOONLAB, as the name suggests, is a cartoon laboratory which aims to develop a new generation of South African cartoonists. TOONLAB offers an ongoing programme of beginners’ workhops and masterclasses on all aspects of cartooning, comic art and illustration. Costs are kept low, with a special student discount and bursaries for applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds.
