Cape Town has Planet's Best Mayor!

Posted Tue, 14 Oct 2008 (4 years ago)

Portfolio joins the world in congratulating Helen Zille - Mayor of Cape Town and now, officially, the Best Mayor on the Planet.

Cape Town’s esteemed mayor, Helen Zille, has done South Africa proud by being voted as the 2008 World Mayor by City Mayors.

City Mayors is “an international network of professionals working together to promote …good local government.” They observe the way in which mayors “develop innovative solutions to…housing, transport, education and employment” as well as monitoring “how they meet the latest environmental, technological, social and security challenges” facing their cities.

In a statement to the press, Tann vom Hove - editor of City Mayors, said that Zille had dedicated her professional life to improving the well-being of South Africans, and that she was the judges’ unanimous choice for the award.

The management and staff of Portfolio Collection, whose head offices are based in Newlands, Cape Town, are proud to join the world in congratulating the city’s mayor following the announcement.

Liz Westby-Nunn, Portfolio CEO, declared this accolade a fitting tribute to a woman who is ‘dedicated, brave and committed’.

Zille, who also heads up the DA (Democratic Alliance) – South Africa’s official opposition party – was ahead of 800 contestants including runner up Emar Ledergerber (mayor of Zurich) and third Leopoldo Lopez (mayor of Chacao).

And how did the mayor herself take the news? With her usual ‘let’s get back to business’ approach, saying that while the award will motivate her she will not ‘rest on her laurels’.

Congratulations Madame Mayor! You are an inspiration to us all.

Ah, Excellent! I voted for her - it's great to see that a vote really counts and that a deserving lady is recognised for great work.
