Following our Mother City being named the Number 1 Travel Destination by TripAdvisor users this week, we are excited to announce that the city also received an award for its World Cup Green Goal Programme this past weekend in Doha, Qatar.
A total of 43 environment protection programmes in 34 countries were submitted. Cape Town’s work to protect and enhance the environment during the 2010 World Cup won the judges approval.
A major part of the programme focussed on refuse – during the World Cup 50% of the city’s waste was recycled.
The city manager for the Green Goal Programme, Lorraine Gerrans, travelled to Brazil in December to present Cape Town’s programme to the Brazilian ministries of sport and environment in the lead up to that country’s hosting of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Great to see South Africa being recognised for eco-awareness and a successful programme on the world stage.
