According to SADD - South Africans Against Drunk Driving:
About 18,000 people are killed on our roads; and 150,000 more are injured yearly - with at least 50% of these crashes due to alcohol misuse. We need to all work together to stop this road carnage.
SADD are running the Alco-Free Feb campaign. They are challenging South Africans to go a month without consuming any alcohol, whether you're driving or not.
There is a cost involved (apart from passing up your evening tipple) and the moneys raised go towards supporting
SADD who are working in prevention, research and service delivery concerning the use of alcohol and the harm misuse causes especially on our roads, and to our youth.
There are a number of ways for the public to become involved - even those who don't want to give up drinking altogether but still want to contribute to the work of SADD:
