I first spotted one of the zebra in the Company Gardens in the Cape Town CBD one night during the World Cup - it had glowing, flashing eyes and was pretty eerie!
Then I saw a few more colourful zebra at the V&A Waterfront and last week spotted this bright red one with a flaming mane on the Main Road in Claremont.
I called Amy from Cavendish Square centre management about them and she told me that the herd is currently decorating the main road outside Cavendish and they are hoping to entice them inside the popular shopping mall soon! They Claremont Council is responsible for their current placement.
I decided to find out more about these zebra and on the WorldForAll website read the following:
"A HERD of 30 beautiful ornamental zebras galloped into Cape Town (in early June 2010) to preach reconciliation, tolerance and peace ahead of the World Cup. The creatures arrived in town for a project by former Western Cape premier Ebrahim Rasool and his new World for All Foundation.
They were designed to catch the attention of World Cup tourists in celebration of the “South African miracle”. The zebras are each painted in unique rich colours by local artists and each offer a famous quote by Nelson Mandela.
Quotes such as “ Anger is a temporary feeling-you soon forget it, particularly if you are involved in positive activities and attitudes” and “ I wanted South Africa to see that I loved even my enemies while I hated the system that turned us against one another” will be displayed."
Isn't it great when art is used to make a positive statement - and to add colour to our daily lives when it comes out of the galleries and onto the streets.
