In the mood the share the love this festive season? While we're all rushing around buying gifts or enjoying receiving gifts, many of us like to give back. There are many charities and NGOs one can support financially - here's one you may not have heard of.
Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary is registered as a Non Profit Organisation (NPO) and a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO). in Montagu provides care for abused, neglected and elderly donkeys and aims to create a culture of respect for all living creatures.
The Sanctuary provides an immediate and humane response to the needs of gentle and patient creatures that are all too often maltreated and made to endure truly horrific circumstances.
The establishment of the sanctuary has led to the creation of jobs for both skilled and unskilled workers in a region with high unemployment. It also runs various programmes to help education in the region, to teach school children how to care for donkeys, and to offer special needs children and adults the opportunity for therapeutic interaction with the gentle donkeys.
Adopt a Donkey
YOU can support the work done by Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary by adopting one of the donkeys in their care. This will help towards the costs of our work. You choose the amount you wish to give to your donkey.
Adoption makes an ideal anniversary, birthday, special occasion or Christmas present.
You will receive:
· details of the donkey you decide to adopt;
· a photo;
· an adoption certificate;
· a twice yearly report; and
· our quarterly news letter.
And you are most welcome to come and visit your special donkey!
Adoption levels of support
Suggested levels of support are:
1. Contribution to feed: R50 per month (R600 per year).
2. Contribution to feed: R100 per month (R1200 per year).
3. Contribution to feed and care: R150 per month (R1800 per year).
4. Any other amount you wish to donate.
Some current costs for caring for a donkey are:
* Hay - R140-00 per month - R1680-00 per year.
* Farrier services R500-00 per year.
* Vet services and medicines approx. R800-00 per year.
* Fly and tick control R380-00 per year.
The above gives us an approximate cost per donkey of R3360-00 per year.
Severely neglected donkeys may require additional feeding and care over and above this.
