A Family Explores Port Elizabeth

Posted Thu, 7 Jan 2010 (2 years ago)

Denise Terrell, an ex-pat, now living in the States, shares some of the things she likes to do with her family on their annual vacations back home, specifically in Port Elizabeth.

Things we do in PE #1

We spend a lot of time in Port Elizabeth (the locals call it PE) so we try to see as much as possible.  One trip we do on a regular basis is visiting the Kragga Kamma Game Reserve….essentially a game reserve in suburbia.

Visitors drive around in their own cars looking for wildlife like giraffe, zebra, buck and half way through one would end up at the tea house for a break.  For a fee one can enter the cheetah enclosure to touch the cheetahs, then walk around the board walk area enclosing some of the wildlife and later have a snack before heading back to the car to do the rest of the ride.  At the entrance of the reserve the kids were given a sheet of paper with animals to find while driving around and that kept them on the alert looking for animals.

We hit the beach if we are there in summer, and across the road from the beach is the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World.  This centre has shops, restaurants, an arcade for kids, putt-putt and rides for younger kids.  For the adults there is the Casino and although we have never used it, we’ve been told there is a daycare where the parents can drop the kids off and then go gamble. Inside the complex is a craft market where one can buy trinkets and such.  Most of the vendors only take cash, so credit cards are of very little use at the market.

The kids are troopers when it comes to doing the normal day to day stuff we usually do while on vacation like visiting my family and friends and doing the grocery shopping.   The kids are getting to know tomato chips, Aero, biltong, jelly tots, Romany Creams, Iced Zoo and many other yummy items, very well.

Since  this is the time I try to catch up with my school friends, who also happen to have kids round about the same age as mine, we like to frequent Homeleigh Farmyard where they can feed rabbits, goats, tortoises and pigs and then run wild in a huge outdoor play area.
