Necessity is, they say, the mother of invention. And for some people, the necessity to avoid the noise-levels of the thousands of vuvuzelas being blown at football matches in South Africa was enough to make them stay home.
Out of the need for a lower volume at live matches, the vuvuzela earplug was born.
The African Earplug Company saw this niche in the market – especially with the looming 2010 FIFA World Cup (kick-off June 11th) and came up with the answer - an earplug, shaped like the (to some) offensive instrument and decorated in a variety of colours and patterns.
So those who dislike the braying of the vuvus can attend live matches in relative peace, knowing that the noise will be audible yet muffled to make it more bearable, yet the design makes it fun rather than disapproving.
These earplugs will soon be mass produced and will be available in time for the World Cup.
