5 Mothers’ Day Ideas for South African Moms

Posted Wed, 4 May 2011 (13 months ago)

Mothers’ Day is looming and chances are, like most of us, you’re all out of ideas for something different to give one of the most important women in your life.

This year don’t rely on last-minute flowers and chocolates. Here are our 5 top tips for South African gifts and activities your mom will love.

  • Pamper her: Instead of buying an off the shelf bottle of bubble bath from the nearest supermarket, order this hamper of delectable handmade, all natural body products from Body Thrills.  Lables can be personalised at no extra cost. Hamper contains:  Jasmine, Rose & Ylang Ylang Body Butter; Jasmine, Rose & Ylang Ylang Body Spritz; Rose & Vanilla Hand Cream; Rose & Vanilla Bath Tea PLUS a free 50g Chamomile, Lime & Almond Face Cream (valued at R40) and a free Jasmine, Rose & Ylang Ylang Lip Balm. Info & orders:  http://bodythrills.co.za/

  • Green up her Garden: Rather than the usual bunch of flowers which die within a few days, rather buy your mom some fynbos plants for her garden – they’re waterwise and easy to maintain. A selection of succulents is another great gift for green-fingered moms. Take a drive out to Good Hope Nursery near Cape Point for excellent prices on a wide variety of indigenous plants – and stay for a snack in their delightful tea garden while you’re there. Gautengers, head for Heaven’s Garden Nursery in Doornrandjies which sells mostly indigenous plants.

  • Say “Olive You, Mum!” This weekend is also the Olive Festival at Riebeeck Kasteel up the West Coast. Why not drive Mum out of town for some foodie fun – there will be great meals served at the various eateries in the area, and of course plenty of fine West Coast wines and unlimited olives to taste and buy everywhere.

  • Revisit the Past: Atlantic Rail is running a special Mothers’ Day Train Ride on their Heritage steam train. Older mums and grans will enjoy the ride as much as little ones. Email info@atlanticrail.co.za for details on this and other steam train rides. Readers in KZN, Umgeni Railways runs steam train excursions on the first and last Sunday of each month.

  • Take her away: Why stick to just one day? Show your mom a really good time by taking her out of town for the whole weekend. Visit Portfolio Collection for a selection of wonderful Great Winter Breaks throughout South Africa – special rates for the cooler months. This is a great time to go on safari as Game Lodges are not only more affordable but viewing conditions are often ideal out of summer.
