Do you have a hero? Barack Obama? Nelson Mandela?? Julias Malema???One of mine is Kingsley Holgate. And here's yet another reason why this man is near the top of my own personal heros list.
Following the enormously ambitious and highly successful Africa Outside Edge expedition which saw the distribution of thousands of mosquito nets in a drive to combat malaria, adventurer, explorer and humanitarian Kingsley Holgate and his Foundation are all set for their next expedition.
The Boundless Southern Africa Expedition has the following objectives which as always embrace humanity, a spirit of adventure, education and conservation ideologies:
- To “open up, map and document an adventure route for future generations.” Based on the theme ‘Nature, Culture and Community’.
- To continue the work started by the ongoing ‘Right to Sight’, ‘One Net One Life Malaria Prevention’ and ‘Teaching on the Edge’ programmes from previous expeditions and projects.
- To introduce community conservation programs under the auspices of African Nature Trails.
- To upgrade community soccer fields and initiate a Boundless Southern African Soccer Challenge which will be played during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The expedition is scheduled to leave from the International Tourism Indaba on Monday 11th May 2009. It will comprise a 9000 km journey over a period of three months, linking nine countries, seven Transfrontier Conservation Areas, thirty National Parks and Nature Reserves, and the communities adjacent to these conservation areas.

Sadly, we can’t all take long leave, bid partners and kids farewell and charge about Africa doing good deeds and exploring our amazing continent with famous explorers. Or maybe we can but not right now. Still, most of us can help fund those who are able to do this and in that way be a small part of something a lot bigger than ourselves and our tiny corner of the world.
